The Antics of Bo Bo and friends....

"Uh, Mom? Do guys wear bows?"

The Big White Rabbit

Bo loved to go shopping at Pet Smart. He would prance in head held high taking me directly to the live pet section.  He would talk to all the animals in cages, fuss at the birds who screeched at him.  Raise up putting his paws on the glass fish tanks while moving his head every direction watching the fish inside. He even liked to sit outside the grooming area watching the other dogs get their special style, then trot over to the area that had SPCA pets for adoption and talk to them for awhile.

When he tired of all this I would put him in the front of the basket, where children usually sit, and we would wander around the store looking at everything from sporty outfits to special peanut butter doggie bones. I would always ask his opinion on everything, especially picking out the canned dog food, chicken, beef, lamb. Which ones do you want this time Bo?  Of course, he would talk away expressing his opinion on each can and usually drew the attention of those passing by. Shocked older people always stopped and talked to him. He talked back of course. He always recieved many comments, especially laughter or smiles.

But once, on a visit to his favorite store, he charged over to the pet for sale section and stopped short. There in a large cage was a beautiful fluffy white angora rabbit, with ears to the floor, just like his special one at home. Only this one had pink eyes and moved alot. There were bunnies all over. It was almost Easter. But this Bunny was as big as Bo, and wiggled his nose on Bo's nose as soon as Bo put his against the cage.

Well, it was love at first wiggle, Bo just sat there mesmerized staring at the Bunny, no harm did he intend. Not one sound did he make, he just stared. Perhaps he thought it was his stuffed play Bunny, come to life, I'll never know. All I know is I had to forceably drag Bo away from the cage. He had been in the same position for twenty minutes. I rolled him away in the basket, while he stared back at the Bunny.

After that, each time we went to the store Bo would rush to that area, looking for the Bunny I'm sure. I've often wondered if the rabbit's name was Harvey.

Making his own Vet Appointment

One morning he was missing from underfoot. I had lost him. Nowhere in the house to be found, he must have went out the door with one of the children.......which he never did....but he could open the door himself!!

I spent the morning looking for him. Walking & crying....even up & down all the alleys....looking in dumpsters; thinking someone ran over him & dumped him; etc. We lived in a part residential, part small business area.

I was asking everyone if they had seen him. I was fearing a car had picked him up....a kidnapped baby! I was even checking out Putt Putt Golf. He liked to watch the children play there.

Finally, as I was stumbling along and crying, I saw this young man at the back of a building. The door was open and he was dumping mop water.   I described Bo to him. He said he hadn't seen a puppy like that in the alley, so I stumbled on down to the next big dumpster.

On the way back , out of that same building came a lady, in scrubs, holding Bo Bo! She said,
"Lady, is this little imp yours?"
Of course, Bo was so happy to see me!   He jumped right into my arms....talking....telling me everything!

He had come across from our apartment into their back door. It was a Vet's office not his vet ~  ~  but they had no idea what was going on because he came into the office from the back where other dogs were boarded or in cages for surgery  and such ....soooooo....they just had him sitting up on the counter by their phone system all morning feeding him "doggie treats" that you get from being good at the vet's.  While I had been in hysterics all morning, he had been dining out!!

Bo and I had a talk about him making his own Vet appointments. He then took a nice, long nap!

" Mission: Impossible "   (black & white division)
This photo was entered in the Fair one year.....note the tree.  He rushed out the door to the tree.
SURPRISE! SNOW!       Bo did a quick turnaround....

"What's this stuff, Mom?"

Missing  Again

"Where's Bo Bo?", I asked everyone , all the children in the neighborhood, too.  I looked for him for most of the day.  We had a mass of people, in cars, looking; others knocking on doors; others peeking into backyards.

Then it dawned on me, "Oh God, the horrible dog pound!"  I drove there as fast as I could, with our picture together in hand, to prove he was mine. I rushed up to the counter. They were, of course, unconcerned....laughing at my panic.   "Just look in the male area. We don't know!"
I then made my way through all of the buildings.  It was breaking my heart because I couldn't take each & every animal out of there immediately!

Ahhh...then I hear a familiar voice! He must have heard me talking to the other dogs because he was scratching on the gate, trying to open the lock, and screaming, "Mommmmm, help me!! I'm in jail!!"   I demanded that they release  my terrified Bo immediately!!  While carrying him out of there, I was approached by the Director of the facility. I promptly held up the picture and said,   "He's mine!"    He smiled and replied,  "I was going to take him home with me if no one claimed him!"

Apparently, children had let Bo out of the yard and took him home with them. A "Mom, can we keep him?" thing.   Well, their Mom simply called the pound.   Some people are just stupid.  Anyone could tell that Bo certainly was not a stray!   Their Mom and I had words shall we say...

Through all of this hectic day, ....and Bo Bo was mad at me...!!

"...I do so know how to drive!!  I'm just short!!"

The Car Story

One of Bo Bo's rules was he went everywhere with me. Sitting in his place beside me atop the armrest, his booster chair, looking out talking away.  I was never sure if he was commenting on the traffic, the view,  asking where we were going or simply being a back seat driver of sorts.

This one particular day was a cloudy but pretty day, warm, a bit humid, felt like a spring rain on the way.  Nice day to drive with the window's down.

We pulled into a convenience store, I parked in front, told Bo I was getting a coke, did he want anything.  By which my instructions were, water, and beef jerky, not the hot kind, as near as I could translate.  So I went inside telling Bo, I'll be right back, guard the car.

I chose my items, and was at the counter paying when, the clerk's eyes became huge, her expression a startled one, staring past me.  She then looked at me and softly said, " Mam, I think your dog just drove off in your car."  I whirled around in time to see my beloved ivory mercury marquis rolling backward curving toward the gas pumps.

Believe me, I did not know I could move that fast, but I made it to the car in time to stop it before hitting the gas pumps. Screeching his name, I finally calmed down enough to ask him, "How did you do that".   Bo simply looked at me, like, what's the big deal, I had everything under control.  Did I notice a smile?

Yes, he still got his jerky treat.
Betty Garrity

"....who is that sharp chick next in line? Woof! Woof!"

Bo loves to sing with everyone!

The Astonished Groomer

Bo Bo, unlike most boys, loved baths. He loved to have his back scrubbed with the shower hair brush. He would always dash around after his bath and show off, frisky as could be, as if to say, Look at me! I’m gorgeous!

Now, groomers were a different matter with him, because his first experience with them, a place called   “Need Us Bark Us”    in Fleetwood Shopping Center with shelves full of trophies she supposedly earned,  now again called   " Need Us Bark Us ",  located  3269 Commerce street street  here in Amarillo, he was beaten and mistreated, by the owner.  Who changes the name and location of her business often.   His first experience was a nightmare for him. He was terrified if you even picked up a pair of scissors for any reason after that and would flatten down & shaking . . .She apparently enjoys torture of small puppies.  From then on, I groomed him most of the time.

Very seldom would I trust him to someone else.  However, once, when he needed special care and nails done, I took him to a highly recommended young lady named Mary, a personal friend of my niece.  At "Oh You Dirty Dog's " saloon. He wasn’t happy with me leaving him, but then  Mary  assured me he wouldn’t go into a cage. When I pulled out of the parking place, he was sitting in the glass door looking out and watching me leave. I cried and had difficulty shopping next door because I was worried about him.

When I picked him up, he was napping on a rug in front, beautifully groomed, his nails done, a large fancy, brightly colored scarf tied loosely around his neck.

I sat down to write the check at her desk and Bo Bo was there in a flash, standing up, pawing at my lap, talking a mile a minute.   So, amused and playing with him,  I ask him questions.   “Mary didn’t give you a massage??     She did?    What, trimmed your nails?    Used real shampoo?    Hurt your eyes?”     Bo Bo, talking back, seemed to answer every question and looking back and forth from me to her.   She was by then hystericaly laughing and saying,   “Now, Bo Bo, you know it wasn’t like that.”  She was more than amused at his full conversation. He then pulled off his beautiful scarf, put it in her lap, came back to me, raised up, grabbed the check book I had laid on the desk while I was writing the check, went to the door, and sat down......as if to say, I didn’t like the service! We’re leaving, without paying the bill!

Bo Bo  and I in the Fall.

Bo Bo Bear’s Mouse

Bo Bo wasn't much on other animals being around, but once, we had a little cute mouse that would peek out every once in awhile.  Bo Bo would turn his head side to side and watch the little nose peek out from here and there. They played this game often. This little mouse would even slide down from a cord on the microwave, like a circus performer, and appear to watch me cook on the stove as if to say, “What's for dinner?”

I got quite attached to him, even if he was a mouse. He had a personality all his own…like a pet.  Don't get me wrong, I do not approve of mice in the house, but he seemed to be Bo's friend,  and I was amused with the little creature.  His little  funny personality with antics all his own, won my heart,  not a regular mouse at all.

He was around for a long time. Bo talked to him often.  I don't think Bo knew what he was and probably didn't care. It was just one of his playmates.  The mouse then disappeared and we didn't see him for months.  I'm sure he found another life with a nice lady mouse. They come and go with the fall weather.

One morning, I was busy at the sink when I felt two little legs wrap around my leg. There was Bo, talking and whining, and he was quite distressed. I pried him off my leg and petted him. “What's wrong, Bo???”  He kept going back and forth from me to his water bowl, crying and quite upset. Stopping what I was doing, I went and bent down over his water bowl while he sat there looking so distressed and loudly whimpering.  Ah! There in his water bowl, floating, was a little mouse, quite gone from our world. Bo was not about to drink from his bowl. I can't blame him, but how do you explain to a puppy that you don't think it was a friend of his??

I had to get Bo a new water bowl.  He refused to use that one again.

Shopping Disadvantages

Bo Bo went everywhere I did. It was one of his rules. One day, I needed to run into the grocery store to pick up a loaf of bread for dinner. I left Bo in the pickup with instructions to “stay” and then went inside for my quick purchase. It was warm that day, so I left the window down. He would usually just lay down with his chew bone & wait. "He would be perfectly safe for 5 minutes," I thought. It was our small close neighborhood store.

While choosing the bread, I heard a very puzzled voice on the store loud speaker,

“ If the owner of a small, scruffy looking, black & white dog who talks a lot, is in the store, will they please come to the front and claim him? He was "shopping" in the dog food aisle. He will be  waiting for you at our  checkstand #3.”

I rushed to checkstand # 3 to find Bo Bo sitting on the checkout counter being petted by three young people & an older man with manager on his name tag. They were feeding him jerky. He seemed to be very happy with all the attention.

Apparently, he had grown tired of waiting, so he jumped out and then  came in through the automatic doors!   He was use to going into PetSmart with me, so I had to assume, he went in through the automatic doors straight to the dog food aisle, where he was sniffing all the bags, the  amused  stock boy brought him to the front of the store!  We left without the bread! That suited Bo anyway! He liked homemade biscuits!

The manager waved goodby and said  while laughing  " Thanks for shopping our Food King, come again!"

    Merf Merf ...."....'loons are fun!"

  The  Fearless  Merf

Merf Merf, Bo's Mom, only weighed about  8  pounds but was a fistie little thing, with a speech problem, and very protective of her territory.

One morning I heard a man's voice and loud thumping, with Merf's  constant  odd  merfing.   I rushed out to see a huge city trash truck stopped in the street slightly turned into the alley, with a man yelling and banging on the side of the door while Merf in full attack kept rushing  at the side of the truck.  And his partner franticlly waving.   Did I mention, I was mortified ??

I ran to the street and tried to retrieve Merf from her  attack upon the trash truck, only to be out witted and going in circles around the truck. She was still attacking in full force.  The men inside the truck laughing uncontrollably.

Finally I caught her and holding her tightly extended my apology to the kind city worker, who could have simply ran over her.

He laughed and said   " oh she's just a tiny thing she's not big enough to do very much."    With which  I replied,   "apparently she is, she was holding a 20 ton trash truck at bay."

All this time Merf is merfing her heart out at them. Still laughing they continued on down the alley.

Merf was confined to quarters for the day, but I never figured out how she got out of the yard, or why she decided to attack the trash truck.

To my surprise one of the men dropped by later in the day with a chew bone tied with a red ribbon. Never hurts to make friends with a killer dog.

THE JOURNEY

When you bring a pet into your life, you begin a journey ~ a journey that will bring you more love and devotion than you have ever known, yet also test your strength and courage. If you allow, the journey will teach you many things, about life, about yourself, and most of all, about love. You will come away changed forever, for one soul cannot touch another without leaving its mark.

Along the way, you will learn much about savoring life's simple pleasures  jumping leaves, snoozing in the sun, the joys of puddles, and even the satisfaction of a good scratch behind the ears. Your house will become muddier and hairier. You will wear less dark clothing and buy more lint rollers. You may find dog biscuits in your pocket or purse, and feel the need to explain that an old plastic shopping bag adorns your living room rug because your cat loves the crinkly sound.

You will learn the true measure of love ~  the steadfast, undying kind that says, "It doesn't matter where we are or what we do, or how life treats us as long as we are together." Respect this always. It is the most precious gift any living soul can give another. You will not find it often among the human race.

And you will learn humility. The look in my dog's eyes often made me feel ashamed. Such joy and love at my presence. He saw not some flawed human who could be cross and stubborn, moody or rude, but only his wonderful companion. Or maybe he saw those things and dismissed them as mere human foibles, not worth considering, and so chose to love me anyway.

If you pay attention and learn well, when the journey is done, you will be not just a better person, but the person your pet always knew you to be the one they were proud to call beloved friend.

I must caution you that this journey is not without pain. Like all paths of true love, the pain is part of loving. For as surely as the sun sets, one day your dear animal companion will follow a trail you cannot yet go down. And you will have to find the strength and love to let them go.

A pet's time on earth is far too short  especially for those that love them. We borrow them, really, just for awhile, and during these brief years they are generous enough to give us all their love, every inch of their spirit and heart, until one day there is nothing left.

The cat that only yesterday was a kitten is all too soon old and frail and sleeping in the sun. The young pup of boundless energy wakes up stiff and lame, the muzzle now gray.

Deep down we somehow always knew that this journey would end. We knew that if we gave our hearts they would be broken. But give them we must for it is all they ask in return.

When the time comes, and the road curves ahead to a place we cannot see, we give one final gift and let them run on ahead ~ young and whole once more. "Godspeed, good friend," we say, until our journey comes full circle and our paths cross again.

Shopping Bird

A seagull in Scotland has developed
the habit of stealing chips from a neighborhood shop.

The seagull waits until the shopkeeper isn't looking, and then walks into the store and grabs a snack-size bag of cheese Doritos.

Once outside, the bag gets ripped open and shared by other birds.

The seagull's shoplifting started early this month when he first swooped into the store in Aberdeen , Scotland , and helped himself to a bag of chips. Since then, he's become a regular. He always takes the same type of chips.

Customers have begun paying for the seagull's stolen bags of chips because they think it's so funny.

Treasured Message
from A Friend

It is obvious BoBo who sits in the splendor of safety, abundance and love in heaven has the justice of knowing how incredibily strong your love is.  I cannot say "I understand", yet I can say " As an animal adorer I do understand the sadness.

Your grief is a healing and time and many conversations with your best friend and your #1 angel will bring closure.  The greatest blessing of the loss of something we love so much is that we can take them everywhere we go. This is not achieved when they are alive as we do have time apart, yet in
Heaven EVERYWHERE you go, so does BoBo Bear.

I'm There Inside Your Heart

Right now I'm in a different place,
And though we seem apart,
I'm closer than I ever was...
I'm there inside your heart.

I'm with you when you greet each day
And while the sun shines bright,
I'm there to share the sunsets, too...
I'm with you every night.

I'm with you when the times are good,
To share a laugh or two,
And if a tear should start to fall,,,
I'll still be there for you.

And when that day arrives
That we no longer are apart,
I'll smile and hold you close to me...
Forever in my heart.
